Blanc Space – The Playwright Series
Playread Session for New Scripts in Progress
part of the OCBC Singapore Theatre Festival 2008

Drama Box presents FOUR new plays as rehearsed readings as part of its Blanc Space – The Playwright Series.

Date: Sat 16 August & Sun 17 August 2008
Time: 2.00pm to 5.00pm
Venue: Drama Centre Function Room 1 & 2, Level 3, National Library Building

BLANC SPACE of Drama Box returns with a focus on playwrighting! The Blanc Space was inaugurated in 2000 to focus on the training and development of craft and skills of theatre-making for performers. The aim is also to help capacity-build talent pools for local theatre, especially for the Mandarin theatre scene.

In 2007, with the objective of nurturing new playwrights, we shortlisted an initial list of 8 aspiring writers under Blanc Space to work with 4 established local playwrights – Quah Sy Ren, Chong Chien, Ng How Wee and Lee Shyh Jih.

While it is no surprise that young students formed the main bulk of this batch of aspiring playwrights, we were thrilled to also find experienced working adults interested in attempting the craft. The current list of new playwrights include: Entia Seah (student); Jian Sheng (teacher); Koh Pei Fen (social worker); Wang Pei Jie (student); Lam Guang Feng (NSman) and Cheow Boon Seng (student).

The writers go through a 18-month long new script incubating programme with their mentors, where through regular mentoring and interactions between the new and experienced playwrights, we hope to harvest a new wave of new original Chinese theatre scripts.

In March this year, we held our first internal Playread session for the 6 partial scripts in progress, to encouraging feedback for the new playwrights. The Singapore Theatre Festival will be the first public Playread session for these new scripts. Through these sessions, we hope to showcase these new works to the general public, as well as fellow theatre practitioners. We believe that the harvest from this programme is best shared with the larger community of local theatre scene. While Drama Box retains the staging rights of these scripts, we would be excited if other theatre companies show interest in working with these new playwrights and scripts after the playread session.

These sessions will culminate in the BLANC SPACE: NEW PLAY SEASON in August 2009, where we will present 2 double bills over 4 nights, featuring fruits from the Playwright Series. Besides staging 4 new plays from the series, the other plays will also be given dramatized readings over 2 nights.
